Abstract

The increase in the production and circulation of cultural products, propelled by digital media and technologies, presents educational challenges. The aim of this research is to analyze the animation Avatar: The last airbender (ATLA), which aired between 2005 and 2008, and explore its possible educational contributions. All 61 episodes of ATLA were analyzed using the comprehensive method of Joan Ferrés, which proposes successive readings in the situational, filmic, and evaluative areas. The results of the situational reading illustrate that ATLA has a hybrid influence from both Japanese anime and Western narratives in the constitution of its characters and plot. In the context of the filmic and evaluative reading results, two essential topics of discussion were generated, presenting themselves as an educational debate possibility: inclusivity and the environment. The conclusion is that ATLA can inspire reflection and research in the interface area between education and media.
