Abstract

Currently there are numerous discussions about food introduction. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health and the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics recommend that it starts from six months of full-term chronological age and from six months of corrected age (in case of prematurity). At this stage, the child must show signs of readiness, such as being able to sit without support, supporting the skull and being able to perform chewing movements. This study aimed to identify the ideal time to start introducing food to children under two years of age, in addition to looking for the benefits and harms of it on the eating routine created after the introduction. A literature review was carried out in which scientific articles, guides and children's notebooks, published between 2017 and 2023, were selected. The research results suggest that the introduction begins with fruit and a main meal depending on the parents' choice, highlighting the need for a complete dish with legumes, vegetables, legumes, cereals or tubers and animal protein. It is also worth highlighting foods that are contraindicated at this time of life, such as juices, teas, soft drinks, salt, sugar, processed foods. Currently, there are several methods for introducing food, but none are proven to be the best, as it will depend on socioeconomic conditions, family routine, region where they live, and the child's own preference. It is essential that this phase is filled with lots of love and care for the child.
