Abstract

Colorectal cancer represents a growing public health challenge in Brazil, driven by population
aging, lifestyle changes, and regional inequalities in healthcare access. This study aimed to
compile and critically analyze the scientific literature on the increasing incidence of colorectal
cancer in the country, seeking to understand risk factors, epidemiological patterns, and
prevention strategies. A narrative, exploratory review was conducted through the SciELO,
PubMed, and Google Scholar databases, including articles published between 2000 and
2025 in Portuguese and English. Original studies, reviews, and epidemiological bulletins
addressing the incidence of colorectal cancer in Brazil, its risk factors, and screening
practices were included. The results revealed a significant increase in the disease among
both older adults and younger individuals, associated with factors such as Western dietary
patterns, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Regional and
socioeconomic disparities were also identified, affecting early detection and influencing
mortality rates. It is concluded that expanding population-based screening, strengthening
primary healthcare, and implementing health education policies are essential strategies to
reduce incidence and improve the prognosis of colorectal cancer in Brazil.
