Abstract

The 2021 COVID-19 Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) sparked citizen participation in posts on Twitter and Instagram. The intention is to discuss such participation materialized in statements cut from the research corpus consisting of shorthand notes from the CPI sessions and some Twitter profiles. We sought to understand and analyze the meanings conveyed and the repercussions on the work of parliamentarians, placing digital media as an important figure in the public debate. The analyzes are based on the Critical Theory of Communication, considering social networks as products of the cultural industry that make up a communicative public sphere that interferes with democracy. The results point to social networks as responsible for giving citizens dynamic and unprecedented participation, which has influenced, on several occasions, senators in the conduct of CPI sessions. The need to educate about political participation through digital media and encourage it is also highlighted.
